What are the advantages and disadvantages of PHP SSE?

PHP Server-Sent Events (SSE) is a technology used to achieve real-time data push from the server to the client, with the following advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages:

  1. Easy to use: PHP SSE is simple, easy to understand, and implement.
  2. Real-time capability: Using PHP Server-Sent Events, the server can push data to the client in real-time for live updates.
  3. Lightweight: Compared to other real-time communication technologies like WebSocket, PHP SSE is a lightweight solution.
  4. Compatibility: PHP SSE is widely supported in modern browsers and can be used on most platforms.

Drawback:

  1. One-way communication: PHP SSE only supports one-way communication from the server to the client, and cannot achieve two-way communication from the client to the server.
  2. Connection stability: PHP SSE relies on long connections, which may be unstable and require appropriate handling.
  3. Compatibility issues: Although PHP SSE is supported in most modern browsers, there are still some cases where certain browsers either do not support it or only partially support it.
  4. Performance: PHP SSE may have lower performance compared to other real-time communication technologies such as WebSocket.
