How to resolve a black screen issue after updating and rebooting Ubuntu?

If you encounter a black screen after restarting Ubuntu following an update, you can try the following solutions:

  1. Waiting for a while: Sometimes it may take a few minutes or longer to see the login screen after an update is completed.
  2. Check the GRUB boot parameters: Hold down the Shift key during startup to access the GRUB menu. Select “Advanced Options for Ubuntu” and then choose an earlier kernel version to boot. If you are able to successfully enter the system, the issue may be related to the latest kernel version.
  3. To enter the recovery mode, hold down the Shift key during startup to access the GRUB menu. Select “Advanced Options for Ubuntu,” then choose “Recovery Mode.” Within recovery mode, opt for dpkg to repair the file system and network, followed by selecting “resume” for normal startup. Once the system has booted up, try updating again.
  4. Update the graphics card driver: If a black screen appears after the update, it may be due to the graphics card driver being incompatible. You can try updating the graphics card driver to solve the issue. You can use the command sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall to automatically install the recommended graphics card driver.
  5. Reinstall desktop environment: If the above methods do not work, you can try reinstalling the desktop environment. You can use the command sudo apt-get install –reinstall ubuntu-desktop to reinstall the Ubuntu desktop environment.

If none of the above methods work, you may want to consider backing up important data and then reinstalling the Ubuntu system.
