There are three main modes in Vim:

  1. Command Mode: In this mode, various commands can be executed using shortcuts, such as moving the cursor, deleting text, and other operations. Pressing the Esc key will enter Command Mode.
  2. Insert Mode: In this mode, you can input text by pressing the key “i”.
  3. Visual Mode: In this mode, you can select and manipulate text. Pressing the “v” key will enter Visual Mode.

To switch between these three modes, you can press the corresponding shortcut key:

  1. Switch from command mode to insert mode by pressing the i key.
  2. Switch from command mode to visual mode by pressing the “v” key.
  3. Switch from insert mode to command mode by pressing the Esc key.
  4. Switch from visual mode to command mode by pressing the Esc key.

This allows for easy switching between different modes to edit and manipulate text.
